The graphic at the top of the app reflects weather conditions outside.īut there is no hiding the craziness that lurks below this normalcy. And it does have a very nice uncluttered, and clean interface – you just swipe across different days or tap at a particular time to get more information about it. Of course, it tells you about the weather, giving you the day’s and the week ahead’s information about the temperature, precipitation, wind, visibility pressure, humidity, dew point, and all. The first hint you get of it is while installing it when it will call you “meat bag” (a word you will hear very often, indeed). Yes, you read that right-an app dedicated to something as routine as the weather comes with a truckload of sass. I mean, we are talking of an app that declares: What makes Carrot Weather an app worth getting right now is its insanity. But that is not why we are talking about it again. Interestingly, Carrot Weather used to get its weather data from Dark Sky and will continue to do so until the end of 2021. We had talked of the app earlier but given Apple’s acquisition of Dark Sky (and pulling it off Android altogether), we think it deserves a revisit. It was a tidy illusion, too good to be true-but an illusion that I, among many others, was happy to indulge. Why would we be talking of weather apps at a time when millions of us have been asked to stay indoors? Well, because Carrot Weather is not really your run-of-the-mill weather app. Stay out of the way of the blue part, and I was dry. The storms would move in, change their shape a little, and then pass me by. Its radar allowed you to zoom in on the block-the house, even-where a rain cloud ended. It was cozy to watch the phosphorescent radar images dance across the map while rain drummed at the window. On Dark Sky, the rough edges of a weather forecast felt sanded down to something palatable and easy to digest. If the hypnotic blue and purple shapes weren’t the basis for a perfect long-term forecast, they were soothing to take in live. If weather was passing through, especially at night, the real-time radar screen was my favorite place to watch the bands of rain or snow crawl through my neighborhood from the comfort of my home. My most satisfying experiences with Dark Sky were probably the occasions when I had no intention of going outside at all. What Happened to All Those Jobs ChatGPT Was Supposed to Nuke? The Mysteries of the Dark Side of the Moon But when we talk about Dark Sky, all it was doing was taking the visual input of the radar and extrapolating what was going to happen over the next couple of hours.” When we talk about anything past a few hours, we’re talking about physics. “Any weather forecast beyond a couple of hours, any computer forecast beyond a couple of hours,” Blum explained, “is going to depend on the weather models-supercomputer models that work according to the laws of physics. Blum’s book excavates the forecast, layer by layer, to put together a picture of how the various components come together to do something seemingly impossible.ĭark Sky, widely disparaged by weather scientists, didn’t make the cut. “It was processing the images,” said Andrew Blum, author of The Weather Machine: A Journey Inside the Forecast, “rather than forecasting the weather using physics.” The Weather Machine explores, in deep detail, the science and history of the complex systems, processes, and technological innovations that undergird global weather forecasting. Meteorologists, it’s worth noting, do not and have never shared my enthusiasm.
